About Wandering Shovel Farm
Growing Food. Growing Forward.
Our story
Weβre Trent and Lois Loewen, and we farm near Spiritwood, Saskatchewan.
What started as a large home garden grew into something bigger β first a market garden, then a CSA, and now a modern Farm Membership built around flexibility and real life.
Weβve always loved growing things. And weβve always loved good food. So building a farm that feeds families in our community just made sense.
Today, we grow over 40 kinds of vegetables and herbs across 1.5 acres of intensive beds, along with potatoes, squash, and pumpkins. Our greenhouses allow us to start early, extend the season, and keep fresh produce coming from spring through fall.
We grow without synthetic chemicals and work hard to steward the land responsibly β because we feed our own family from this soil too.
From CSA to Farm Membership
For many years we ran a traditional CSA program. It was a great way to connect families with seasonal food.
But life changes. Schedules get busier. Households need flexibility.
So we evolved.
Our Farm Membership model gives families the ability to support the farm upfront while shopping our harvest on their terms. It keeps the partnership that makes small farms strong β without the pressure of preset boxes.
Same farm. Same vegetables. Smarter system.
Expanding Into Spring Bedding Plants
If youβve visited the farm in May recently, youβve probably noticed something new.
Over the past few years, weβve expanded into spring bedding plant sales β and weβve loved it.
We built our first greenhouse in 2017 to support vegetable production. Before long, it sparked something else. Lois has always loved flowers, and what started as growing our own blooms turned into growing plants for others.
Now each spring we offer:
Bedding plants
Hanging baskets
Vegetable transplants
Potted arrangements
Spring in the greenhouse is a busy, hopeful time. Trays of petunias, tomatoes, herbs, and flowers fill the space long before the fields are ready. Itβs a season of anticipation β and weβre grateful to share it with our customers.
Vegetables may have built this farm, but flowers bring their own kind of joy.
A Real Family Farm
Weβre raising seven active kids here on the farm, along with a couple of dogs, some cats, and laying hens.
Our house looks lived in. Our yard looks used.
Because it is.
Our children have grown pumpkins, tomatoes, gourds, and more. Theyβve helped harvest, wash carrots, pack orders, and sell at markets. Farming isnβt just what we do β itβs how we live.
Why We Do This
We believe local food matters.
It keeps food dollars in Saskatchewan.
It strengthens rural communities.
It gives families confidence in whatβs on their table.
When you shop with us β whether through Farm Membership, our online store, farmerβs markets, or spring plant sales β youβre supporting a small family farm that is continually learning, adapting, and growing.
Weβre grateful youβre here.
And weβd be honoured to grow for you.
